Today is the 84th anniversary of the famous Niki de Saint Phalle´s birth. Niki was a French sculptor, painter, and film maker form Paris. Born in Paris in 1930, Niki was three years old when her family moved to the United States where her father worked as a manager of the American branch of the Saint Phalle family's bank.
She went to school and at eighteen, when her husband was studing music at Harvard, she began to paint experimenting with different media and styles. In 1955, she moved to Spain and visited Madrid and Barcelona where she became deeply affected by the work of Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí's influence opened many previously unimagined possibilities to Saint Phalle, especially with regard to the use of unusual materials and objets-trouvés as structural elements in sculpture and architecture.
In 1960, Niki de Saint Phalle created "Shooting paintings", polythene bags filled with paint. In 1966, she started to make sculptures in Sweden and became one of the renowned painters and sculptors of that time.
Let's see some of her works.
